The Importance of Your Wedding Music:

Music is such an important part of our lives.  It surrounds us at work, in our cars, at home, while we shop, even in elevators.  Music will also be an important part of your wedding day.  It will set the tone of the day from start to finish.  There will be music playing from the moment your first guests arrive until the last candle is blown out.  Take the time to plan your music for the whole day carefully so that it reflects your personal tastes. If you create a theme for your wedding such as Celtic,  Victorian, or even Disney, plan the music to embellish your theme.  Make this is your day!

Remembrance:

Of all the wonderful parts of your Wedding Day, the music is one of the things  you will remember most.  You may forget what was served, what kind of cake you had, what kind of flowers you carried or who came and who didn’t, but you will always remember the music you walked down the aisle to. By choosing a harp for your wedding ceremony, every time you ever see a harp, you will remember your wedding day.   58% of Brides surveyed said that music was the most important factor in the success of their wedding day while accounting for only 4.8% of the budget on average.  What a deal!  Be sure to put some thought into this important part of your day.

How to Choose Your Wedding Music:

Choosing the music for your wedding ceremony can be very intimidating. Traditional ceremony music is classical and many of us don’t have a classical music background.  Please be assured that I am very familiar with all this music and part of my job is to help you make these decisions easily. Below are examples of beautiful traditional and classical pieces which are often used in wedding ceremonies.  There are also examples of celtic and contemporary pieces which are appropriate and  I have found to work well.  All of these selections can be heard on my  CD “TO HAVE and TO HOLD”. You can also hear short samples of the highlighted selections below by clicking on them.  Remember, my goal is to make your wedding day music unique, individual and a reflection of your musical taste.  If you don’t see what you want here, I’ll work with you till we find the perfect selections.

The Prelude:

The Prelude will start 20 - 30 minutes before your ceremony is scheduled to begin and will establish the mood as your guests arrive.  Unless you have a specific request, I usually play a mix of instrumental, classical, or new age music which is suitable for prayer, reflection or quiet conversation .  The following are examples from “TO HAVE and TO HOLD” which create an elegant, romantic and classical ambiance:

Prelude in C - Bach
Ave Maria (harp solo) - Schubert
Ave Maria (harp and flute) - Schubert
Pavane - Unknown 16th Century Composer
Canon in D - Pachelbel
Hymne - Vangelis
Watermark - Enya
Liebestraum - Liszt
Ladye Greensleeves - Celtic

Wedding Party Processional:

Your Wedding Party processional begins as the Groom and Officiant enter, continues for all the bridesmaids, groomsmen and any kids (flower girls and ring bearers).  This music should have an even cadence that is easy to walk to and should  be sweet, tender and delicate allowing the music to build for the Bride’s grand entrance.  The following work nicely:

Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring - Bach
Canon in D - Pachelbel
Hymne - Vangelis
Aire on a G String - Bach
The Ash Grove - Celtic

Bridal Processional (Here Comes the Bride)

This is  your grand entrance and the centerpiece of the entire day.  You will remember this music and this moment, as you stand waiting to walk down the aisle, for the rest of your life.  This piece should be glorious and grand and should give you chills.    The traditional “Here Comes the Bride” is a beautiful choice but if you want something different, there are many other wonderful options listed below:

Trumpet Voluntary - Purcell/Clarke
Bridal Chorus (Here Comes the Bride) - Wagner
Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring - Bach
Aire from “Festes de L’Ete” - Monteclair
Morgan Magan - Celtic

The Ceremony:

Music can be used during the ceremony anytime there is no speaking such as during communion, the lighting of the Unity Candle or while giving roses to the Mothers or to each other.  One suggestion I like to make is to include a Meditative piece of music near the beginning of the ceremony.  Your Wedding Day will be a blur, everyone will want a piece of you.  A wonderful luxury for the Bride and Groom is to have 2 full minutes, as you stand surrounded by all the people you love most in the world, to go inside yourself,  think your own thoughts and get a bit grounded before taking your vows. The music for this should either be instrumental (so you are not tempted to sing the words in your head) or meaningful to you in some way.  These are some of my favorites:

Prelude in C - Bach
Ave Maria (harp solo) - Schubert
Ave Maria (harp and flute) - Schubert
Hymne - Vangelis
Watermark - Enya
Liebestraum - Liszt
Ladye Greensleeves - Celtic
“Your Song” - a special arrangement of your favorite song

The Recessional (There Goes the Bride): TA DA!  You are married!  Now we need joyful, exuberant music to see you down the aisle.  Usually, one piece of music will get the Wedding Party out and another is needed while your guests exit so you will want to choose a couple of the following:

Trumpet Voluntary - Purcell/Clarke
Wedding March - Mendelssohn (Traditional)
Ode To Joy - Beethoven
Jesu, Joy of Man’s’s Desiring - Bach
Aire from “Festes de L’Ete” - Monteclair
Sonatina No. III - Dussek

I hope this guide has been helpful to you.   All the music in this guide can be heard on TO HAVE & TO HOLD. I look forward to being a part of your special day and doing everything I can to make the musical side of it wonderful!.
